| Whitsundya Island, 43 square miles in area, is the largest of the 74 islands that make up the archipelago of the same name. Located off the east coast of Australia. As seen here on White Haven beach, the island's shoreline is marked by the exceptional whiteness of its sand, made up of coral sediment originating from the Great Barrier Reef a few miles to the east. The sand forms dunes along the irregular line of the coast that move with the current. The water of the Pacific infiltrates between them with the rising tide. Discovered in 1770 by British navigator James Cook, the islands of the archipelago have, for the most part, remained uninhabited and unexploited. Since 1930, however, a few have gradually been developed as beach resorts. |
