| Earth From Above series. Lake Nakuru, with a surface area of 24 square miles, is located in the heart of the national park of the same name. It shelters nearly 370 bird species, of which the small flamingo(Phoeniconaias minor) and the pink flamingo(Phoenicopterus ruber) are the most plentiful. The high salt content of this body of water favors the proliferation of algae, plankton, and shrimp, which are the primary food sources of these birds. However, chemical products used by neighboring farming have gradually polluted the lake's waters, limiting the development of flora and fauna. Flamingos, which numbered 2 million at this site in the 1970's, have gradually deserted it, and more than two-thirds have migrated to other lakes. It is believed that this region of East Africa, the Rift Valley, is home to more than half of all flamingos in the world. By photographer Yann Arthus Bertrand. |
