| Earth from Above series. In Mauritania, as in all countries bordering the Sahara, the dromedary proves to be the domestic species best adapted to the arid local conditions. This animal can do without water for many months in the winter. In summer, because of the heat and expended effort, the dromendary can last only a few days without drinking. By comparison, a human would die of dehydration within twenty-four hours. The reserve fat contained in its single hump helps in thermal regulation, allowing the dromedary to withstand the heating of its body without needing to perspire. The Maurs, the ethnic majority in Mauritania, raise the dromedary for its milk, meat, skin and wool. In the late 1990s the country's dromedary livestock equaled about one million.
